Turkey has stopped searching for victims of the earthquake two weeks ago in most provinces. Only in the heavily affected regions of Kahramanmaras and Hatay are people still being searched, in the other nine provinces there is no longer a search.
According to director Sezer of the Turkish rescue service Afad, about forty collapsed buildings are still being searched for people. In Turkey, at least 41,000 people died as a result of the earthquake, in Syria at least 5,800.
The death toll is expected to rise further. As far as we know, 345,000 homes have been destroyed in Turkey. Many people are still missing. Three people were pulled alive from the rubble yesterday. One of them, a child, later died from the effects of dehydration.
Blink’s visit
US Secretary of State Blinken has arrived in Turkey. He will visit, among other things, the earthquake area and will talk to President Erdogan tomorrow.
The Americans today pledged another $100 million in aid to Turkey and Syria, on top of the $85 million previously pledged.
Blinken is expected to discuss not only the earthquake disaster with Erdogan, but also the accession of Finland and Sweden to NATO. Turkey is against this.
