Jakarta, CNBC IndonesiaNew discoveries reveal layers of the Earth that have been hidden. The “other world” is behind the Earth’s core.

So far, science has divided the Earth’s layers into four categories: the Earth’s crust, the Earth’s mantle, the outer core and the inner core. However, this category seems to have changed.

The conclusion that the Earth consists of four layers was taken from research on materials spewed out by volcanoes and through seismic waves.

From these two sources of information, scientists estimate that the Earth’s innermost core, whose temperature exceeds 5,000 degrees Celsius, only contributes to 1% of the Earth’s volume.

Several years ago, University of Australia geophysicist Joanne Stephenson and colleagues found evidence of two distinct layers in the inner core, quoted from Science Alert, Thursday (16/2/2023).

“This is so much fun, we might have to rewrite all the school books!” Stephenson said.

The research team used algorithms to filter and match thousands of models from the inner core. It does this by observing decades of data on seismic wavelengths traveling deep within the Earth.

They succeeded in finding several models of anisotropy (the difference in seismic waves as they pass through a certain material composition) in the Earth’s inner core.

Stephenson said his team found evidence suggesting a change in the structure of iron in the Earth’s core.

“We found evidence that there were changes in the structure of iron, which suggests there were two cooling events at different times in Earth’s history,” Stephenson said.

In fact, there have been allegations of other layers in the Earth’s core, especially since the iron crystals in the Earth’s innermost core have a variety of structures.
