AMMAN – King Charles’s coronation party took a hit after Adele and Ed Sheeran turned down invitations to take part in the historic ceremony. The Daily Mail revealed the singers were asked to perform after the king discussed with the organizers his hopes for them to appear, but Sheeran and Adele said they were busy and unable to perform at the Windsor Castle event on May 7, the day after the king’s coronation at Westminster Abbey.

A source involved in the King Charles Coronation Project said: “The King suggested a number of people he would like to perform and Adele and Ed Sheeran were on that list. “But they got responses that they weren’t available, which was a huge disappointment. They are giants of the singing industry and they are mainly British but also known all over the world.”

Ed Sheeran, who closed the late Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee last June with his song Perfect, chosen as a tribute to the then queen and her late husband, the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Philip, is due to appear in a performance in Texas the day before the coronation ceremony. While this would make it difficult for him to get to Windsor Castle, insiders say it would be possible to make the nine-hour journey in time on a private jet.

Adele, 34, doesn’t have anything publicly listed on May 7 — or, in fact, after March 25 when her Las Vegas residency ends.

It is not yet known if Harry Styles will be part of the line-up, although it is understood the King wants him to be involved. Meanwhile, Lionel Richie is close to approval, as are the Spice Girls, although organizers are yet to confirm whether or not Victoria Beckham will appear, after she vowed never to perform in public again after suffering years of ridicule over her voice.

The anthem by composer Andrew Lloyd Webber is one of 12 new pieces of music commissioned by the king for his coronation.
