The Association of Banks addresses depositors.. and fears the street explosion
Beirut: «The Gulf»
The economic crisis in Lebanon is escalating in view of the insane rise of the dollar and prices, and the Association of Banks in Lebanon issued, yesterday, Saturday, a statement indicating that there is a plan to systematically destroy the banking sector at the hands of a group of mercenary payers who do not exceed fifty people, addressing depositors that their deposits are with the state. Not at the banks. It also denounced the violent incidents witnessed by the facades of some banking institutions, in the wake of the chaos that the Lebanese street witnessed, on Thursday and Friday, as a result of blocking the roads, passing through what happened to the banks.
To rectify the situation for fear of a wide explosion in the street, the Central Security Council met under the chairmanship of caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati and the participation of the Minister of Interior and Municipalities, Bassam Mawlawi, in addition to the security and judicial agencies. Efforts to maintain security were emphasized, and political confusion was not allowed to reflect on security and the street.
Sources following the Lebanese internal affairs expressed their fear of what is happening in the street, which is taking an escalating pace, pointing out that “the absence of any reform measures on the economic and social levels, to address the rise in the exchange rate of the dollar and its repercussions, will have an impact on the ground, and the economic chaos will translate into social chaos in street».
Yesterday, the currency market in Lebanon witnessed a decline in the exchange rate of the dollar, after it had been on an upward trajectory for a long time, exceeding the edge of 81,000 pounds. Yesterday, it recorded a decline to 78,000 pounds per dollar. In the opinion of Lebanese sources, the decline that occurred was caused by speculation.
These sources indicated that “there is no actual reason for the decline in the exchange rate of the dollar, in light of the blockage of horizons regarding the presidential elections, the political tension taking place, the absence of reforms, and the failure to hold a legislative session; Rather, the path of the dollar is upward,” stressing the need to move towards political solutions and the regularity of constitutional work, to address the economic crisis. The legislative session that may be agreed upon in the meeting of the Bureau of the House of Representatives tomorrow, Monday, remained a point of debate on the parliamentary line, between those who say that it is not permissible to hold sessions in the absence of the President of the Republic, and those who say that legislation is permissible.
According to the information, the atmosphere of the Speaker of the Parliament confirms that he cannot accept to undermine the legislative role of the parliament, and from here he may initiate a call for a legislative session, which is permitted by the constitution.
The head of the Free Patriotic Movement, Representative Gebran Bassil, confirmed during the General Assembly of the youth sector in the movement, in the presence of former President Michel Aoun, that they “want reform, and also want to meet and bring in a corrupt president, a corrupt prime minister and a central ruler who corrupted them and protected them.” Aoun warned, however. On Twitter, “All officials who seek to renew the governor of the Banque du Liban are against this step, which will be the end of Lebanon and the final blow that will bring it down permanently.”
