British embassy employee who provided information to Russia jailed for 13 years, 2 months – BBC News

British embassy employee who provided information to Russia sentenced to 13 years and 2 months in prison

A man who worked as a security guard at the British embassy in Berlin and sold information to Russia was caught by the British Security Service (MI5) and sentenced to 13 years and 2 months in prison in the Central Criminal Court in London on the 17th.

David Smith, 58, had earlier pleaded guilty to violating the National Secrets Act.

Presiding Judge Mark Wohl found that Smith sought to harm Britain’s national interests by providing information to Russia about embassy operations and embassy staff for monetary reward.

The BBC’s domestic editor Tom Simons explains the details of the case and the investigation by MI5.
