The claim was made by the Chinese Ambassador to the United Nations Zhang Jun.
Addressing a UN Security Council briefing on Friday (17/2/2023), the diplomat noted the ongoing crisis in Ukraine is the result of NATO’s continuing eastward expansion.
He urged the US-led military bloc to abandon its Cold War mentality and stop being a “troublemaker”.
He also demonstrated NATO’s “self-contradictory” behavior, in which the bloc promotes itself as a “defense alliance” while at the same time continuing to seek “to encroach on its geographic boundaries and expand its agenda, fomenting division and tension, creating fear and confrontation.”

“The pursuit of absolute security and the political exclusion and forced detention of certain persons are the main reasons why Europe is in such a bad security situation,” he said.
“Europe, and indeed the rest of the world, will be caught in even greater chaos unless NATO changes its mindset,” the diplomat said.
Zhang repeated China’s call for a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, urging them to start peace negotiations as soon as possible.
