A few days before Joe Biden’s trip to Poland, Washington reaffirms its support for Ukraine
“We can proudly say that our support for Ukraine remains unwavering and that (…) the international coalition supporting Ukraine is stronger than ever”assured Friday a spokesman for the White House, John Kirby, repeating that the United States would support kyiv “as long as it takes”.
This statement comes as US President Joe Biden will visit Poland, a country bordering Ukraine, next week. He will speak on Tuesday during a solemn speech at the Warsaw Palace. Three days before the first anniversary of the invasion of Ukraine, he will want “send a message to [Vladimir] Putin as much as the Russian people”said John Kirby.
Joe Biden must allay fears over the future of US support. The president, who plans to run again in 2024, lost control of one of the two chambers of Congress in November to the Republican opposition, some of whom are threatening to question aid to Ukraine . Without however so far really shaking the political consensus.
“We are committed to helping Ukraine. Not for vague moral reasons (…) but rather because America’s core interests are at stake.”said the leader of the Republican senators, Mitch McConnell, on Friday at the Munich security conference.
” THE [élus] eccentrics are attracting media attention, but I think the vast majority, including Republicans in the House, want to continue supporting Ukraine.”said the influential Democratic senator Sheldon Whitehouse in an interview with Agence France-Presse.
