The FedEx delivery man involved in the death of 7-year-old Athena Strand has been indicted for murder after allegedly hitting the girl with his vehicle in September in Texas, according to the Wise County Sheriff’s Office.
The office reported that Tanner Horner, 30, was charged with capital murder and aggravated kidnapping, according to Fox News.
“I would like to thank the Wise County Grand Jury for their role in this proceeding. Without a doubt, hearing the facts and circumstances of my 7-year-old daughter’s kidnapping and murder was very difficult for them. I want them to know that her work is deeply appreciated,” Maitlyn Gandy, Athena’s mother, said in a statement Thursday that was published by Fox 4 Dallas.
“Tanner Horner’s indictment is the beginning of a long journey through the justice system. I appreciate everyone’s continued support and for keeping Athena’s name and memory alive. Take a moment to hug her children and her loved ones. No one is promised another day,” Gandy continued.
The suspect said that accidentally hit the girl with his vehicle while delivering packages to her father, Jacob Strandin Paradise, Texas.
Likewise, the subject admitted that the girl was fine despite the impact received. He said she could talk about her, but panicked, pushed her into her truck and strangled her to death, according to her reports.
The affidavit obtained by the Fort Worth Star-Telegram stated that after attempting to strangle the girl, the suspect resorted to attacking the father of the minor for fear that he would find out what happened.
Athena remained missing for several days before authorities in Texas found the girl’s body less than 10 miles from her father’s home in December 2022.
