So far, more than 45 thousand people have been confirmed dead in earthquakes. Hundreds of thousands of people have been left homeless and need help. Turkish authorities estimate that approximately 74,000 buildings, which are considered unsafe, will have to be demolished in the near future in the regions most affected by the earthquakes.
CONTEXT:
A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8 on the Richter scale occurred on the night of February 6 in southeastern Turkey and neighboring Syria. The number of victims of the earthquake has exceeded 40,000.
There is also growing talk about the fact that buildings in Turkey are too often built in violation of regulations. Since earthquakes occur quite often in Turkey, all buildings must be extremely resistant. However, the collapse of around 6,000 houses shows construction irregularities.
Part of the blame also lies with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, whose party has been in power for 20 years. The Turkish president has admitted that his government is unable to provide aid to victims as quickly as people would like.
