‘Golf Emperor’ Tiger Woods was criticized harshly for playing with a sanitary pad on his comeback stage after 7 months.
On the 17th, at the 9th hole in the first round of the Genesis Invitational of the PGA Tour, Woods was caught passing a sanitary napkin to his partner, Justin Thomas, on camera. It was a prop prepared in advance to tease Thomas when his tee shot flew farther than Thomas.
When Thomas was handed a sanitary pad, he burst into laughter. Woods and Thomas are famous for being close friends who get along like real brothers.
However, controversy arose as this scene spread through radio waves and social media. Some critics pointed out Woods’ actions as “disparaging Thomas for ‘playing like a girl’.”
Sky Sports’ Sarah Stuck said: “This is a very stupid move. It’s really disappointing,” he criticized Woods. USA Today columnist Christine Brennan criticized Woods’ prank, saying, “This was something Woods, who has a 15-year-old daughter, shouldn’t have done.”
Lawyer and writer Julie Dickaro said, “Men may find these pranks amusing, but they insult women.”
As the controversy spread, Woods apologized after the second round on the 18th, the next day, saying, “It was a joke without bad intentions,” and “I’m sorry if I hurt someone unintentionally.”
