Clyde Tombaugh was born in 1906 to an Illinois farming family. As a boy, he developed an interest in stargazing which was encouraged by his father and uncle.
The first telescope Clyde saw belonged to his uncle. The first telescope he owned was purchased from Sears.
In 1925, Clyde was dissatisfied with his shop-bought telescope and decided to build his own.
Clyde’s father took odd jobs to pay for the materials needed to build it.
The telescope Clyde built in 1925 was only the first of more than thirty that he would build during his lifetime.
In 1928, Clyde completed construction of a highly accurate 23 centimeter reflector.

The mount for this telescope is made from the crankshaft part of a 1910 Buick and removes part of the cream separator.
