(Beijing = Yonhap News) Correspondent Han Jong-gu = Beijing, the capital of China, was enveloped in thick smog.
According to the Beijing Environmental Protection Observation Center on the 17th, as of 4:00 pm on the same day, the air quality index (AQI) across Beijing recorded a level 5 ‘severe pollution’.
China’s AQI is excellent (0-50), good (51-100), lightly polluted (101-150), moderately polluted (151-200), severely polluted (201-300), severely polluted (301-500), etc. It is divided into 6 stages.
The main pollutant was ultrafine dust (PM 2.5).
The PM 2.5 concentration at 35 air pollution observation points installed in Beijing recorded an average of 207 μg/m3.
Considering that the ultrafine dust recommendation standard set by the World Health Organization (WHO) is 5 μg/m3, air quality has deteriorated more than 41 times the standard.
There were also 12 spots where the concentration of PM 2.5 was over 220 μg/m3, and some areas in southeast Beijing soared to 254 μg/m3, more than 50 times the WHO recommended standard.
Because of this, the streets of Beijing produced a cloudy sky as if a black and white TV had been turned on all day.
The Environmental Protection Observation Center urged “children and the elderly to stop outdoor exercise and stay indoors, and the general public should also reduce outdoor exercise.”
