For the first time in history! Scientists have shown footage taken almost 40 years ago from “Titanic”

The video, most of which has not been shown to the public before, was taken just months after researchers discovered the wreck in September 1985.

The grainy black-and-white images show the bow of the liner and some railings along one of its decks, as well as other parts of the famous passenger ship, Sky News reports.

Oceanographer Robert Ballard said that the first thing he saw when he got under the water was “a giant wall of riveted steel that towered over us more than 100 feet (over 100 meters).”

“Titanic” is a British passenger steamship. At the time of construction, it was the largest liner in the world.

The Titanic sank on her maiden voyage from Southampton to New York after hitting an iceberg on the night of April 14-15, 1912. More than 1,500 people lost their lives in the disaster.

Interesting facts about “Titanic”

“Titanic” was the largest ship in the world at the time of commissioning, its length was 269.1 meters and width up to 28.19 meters. At the moment, the largest vessel is “Prelude FLNG”, an Australian natural gas extraction vessel, which is 488 meters long and 74 meters wide. It was launched in 2013 and is the largest floating object on Earth. And its height reaches 105 meters!

The collision of the “Titanic” with an iceberg caused global consequences. In the wake of this disaster, many countries have launched a joint project to continuously track all potential threat icebergs. It still works, and by the way, since the sinking of the “Titanic” more than a hundred years ago, there have been no similar disasters.

Researching the wreck of the crashed “Titanic” is complicated by the fact that it lies at a depth of approximately 3,750 meters. Expeditions to the site of the tragedy took place regularly, and search parties brought thousands of items to the surface. However, the hull of the ship itself cannot be raised because it is deeply buried in the mud.

The large number of victims in the “Titanic” accident is due to several reasons. There was no global warning system on board, the rank and file crew members were only vaguely familiar with their duties in the event of an emergency, and many people on board were not even aware that the ship was sinking for a long time. Survivors reported the many instances of heroism in which people saved others through self-sacrifice.

About one and a half thousand people worked on the construction of “Titanic”, and some of them were 12-13-year-old teenagers. Safety equipment was not yet developed in that era, and there were occasional accidents, some extremely serious, when the ship was traveling.

The capacity of all “Titanic” lifeboats was three times less than the actual number of passengers and crew members – about 2,500 people traveled with the ship, but it was served by 960 officers and sailors. Right after the disaster of the liner, the number of boarding places in the boats began to be necessarily calculated according to the number of people on board, and not according to the tonnage of the ship as before. In addition, 48 boats were initially included in the project, but the owners of the company reduced this number to 20 for reasons of economy, as they believed that the “Titanic” was unsinkable.

Almost all the men who were on the liner at the time of the accident died – both crew members and passengers. This is due to the fact that Captain Edward Smith, realizing that there were not enough boats to save all the people on board, ordered to save women and children first. And millionaire Isidor Strauss and his wife Ida have also gone down in history. As an exception, the sailors offered Strauss to board the boat with the women, but he resolutely refused and declared that he would stay with the other men on board. His wife, on the other hand, refused to leave her husband and decided to share his fate, thus becoming an example of courage and self-sacrifice. Captain Smith himself, like most of his officers, died in the Titanic accident while remaining on board. This voyage was to be his last swim before retirement.

The voyage during which the ship hit an iceberg and sank was its first and last. In the 24 hours before the collision, the Titanic received seven iceberg warnings, but for unknown reasons ignored them. Its accident became one of the biggest disasters at sea in peacetime, but dozens of countries and cities erected memorials commemorating the tragedy.
