“Unfortunately, communication difficulties are just one symptom of the illness Bruce is facing. While this is painful, it is a relief to finally have a clear diagnosis,” his family said. FTD, they say, is a “cruel disease that many of us have never heard of and that can affect anyone.”
There are no treatments for FTD, but Willis’ family hopes that will change in the future. The famous actor would have loved to play a part in that by seeking out the media and raising awareness. However, that is not possible due to his condition.
FTD often occurs at a relatively young age. According to Alzheimer Nederland, the disease causes severe changes in behavior, language skills and motor skills. Memory problems often only occur at a later stage.
“We are moved by the love you all have shared for our dear husband, father and friend during this difficult time,” the family said in a statement signed by Willis’ wife Emma, his ex-wife Demi Moore and his five children. “Your continued compassion, understanding and respect will ensure that we can help Bruce live the best life possible.”
Willis was one of the biggest movie stars of recent decades. One of his most famous roles is that of John McClane in the Die Hard-films.
