The earthquake in Romania yesterday was a surprise

One hundred and sixty aftershocks have occurred since yesterday’s magnitude 5.7 earthquake in Romania’s Gorz County. It was felt as far away as Serbia and Hungary and had an intensity above 7 in the area of the epicenter.

This is the largest seismic activity in the area in the last 200 years, reported the National Institute of Geophysics in Romania.

“This area is known for low seismic activity. What happened on Monday and Tuesday was a surprise. Our calculations showed a maximum magnitude of 5.5 in this area. This has only happened once in history, about 80 years ago, in 1943, when an earthquake of 5.2 magnitude was recorded in the area,” informed the scientific director of the institute, Mircha Radulyan, quoted by Digi24.

However, experts categorically reject the possibility of Gorzh becoming the new Vrancha district. “We expect more aftershocks in the coming days, but with a lower intensity, respectively with a maximum magnitude of 4 degrees”, added the National Institute of Geophysics.

Three seismic stations are to be installed in the Gorge district, which will supplement the current seismic network with more data on the phenomenon, BTA reported. Five GPS stations will also be installed, with the help of which the movements of the faults will be monitored.
