Bern is under pressure because of the war in Ukraine. If Switzerland wants to stick to a neutral special role, it has to help more in its own way.
The Russian attack on Ukraine almost a year ago caught Switzerland unprepared. Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis made one misstep after another. Partly this was due to the rush that initially prevailed in government. But after the missteps, Cassis also tripped himself up: his plan to redefine neutrality failed as quickly as it was launched. In the course of his presidential year, however, Cassis rose to prominence in the Ukraine dossier.
