The Schengen veto remains in force for Bulgaria and Romania. This was confirmed by Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer, quoted by Kronen Zeitung.
He repeated his already familiar position.
Even if successes are achieved at the EU summit on migration, Nehamer has no intention of giving up the veto on the accession of Bulgaria and Romania to Schengen.
Nehammer defended the Schengen veto for Bulgaria and Romania
The borders are not well guarded, he emphasized once again
“As long as the EU asylum system does not work, the veto remains,” he said.
Nehammer cannot understand the excitement over the veto. “At that time, Germany blocked Austria’s accession to Schengen for three years,” Nehhammer said.
In addition, Germany currently controls the borders with Austria. “If Germany is of the opinion that Bulgaria and Romania should become part of Schengen, then Germany should also stop border control with Austria,” specified Nehamer.
We remind you that for Schengen, during his meeting with Prime Minister Galab Donev in January, the chancellor emphasized the systemic problem of the Schengen area. These borders must be protected, he said. Internal borders in the EU are already controlled, he said. We have a big problem with illegal migration, Nehammer said.
There are over 100,000 asylum applications in Austria. 75,000 are for first-time entrants and these migrants have passed through European borders.

Bulgaria needs more technical capabilities for Schengen
We work intensively at all levels of diplomacy, we have covered all Schengen criteria. With the support of Hungary and with the support of all our European partners from the European Union, we will be able to join the Schengen area already this year. Keeping Bulgaria and Romania outside Schengen means economic losses not only for Bulgaria, but also for the entire EU.
This was stated by the president earlier in February Rumen Radev after a meeting with his Hungarian counterpart Katalin Novak.
