More than a week after the catastrophe of the devastating earthquake that struck the border area between Turkey and Syria, the death toll has risen to more than 40,000, according to statistics issued by the two countries today, Tuesday.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said, according to the official Anatolia news agency, that the death toll rose to 35,418 in Turkey alone.
The latest death toll in Syria has reached 5900 dead.
In just over a week, specifically in the early hours of Monday, February 6, the first earthquake of 7.8 degrees on the Richter scale occurred in southeastern Turkey and northern Syria. Hours later, an aftershock of 7.7 magnitude followed.
Today, Tuesday, rescue teams continue to search for survivors under the rubble, despite the bitter cold and difficult working conditions.
Today, in a miraculous manner, the teams have already recovered more than nine people in different regions of Turkey after they had been stuck for eight days under the rubble.
