Cemal Kutahya, the captain of the Turkish national football team, died due to the devastating earthquake that struck the southern part of the country and neighboring Syria.
The International Handball Federation, quoting the Turkish Handball Federation, said that Kutahya’s body was found under the rubble of his destroyed house in central Antakya, along with his five-year-old son.
Kutahya, 32, played with the Hatay Metropolitan Municipality team, and was captain of the national team and the Turkish beach handball team.
And the Turkish Federation stated in a statement: “With deep sadness, we learned of the death of Jamar Kutahya, captain of the men’s national handball team, and his son, Cinar Kutahya, as they were found under the rubble of their house in which they lived in the city of Antakya.”
Kütahya was among the many sports personalities who perished during the February 6 earthquake, which according to figures released today claimed 37,000 lives, and thousands are still missing.
