The goal of such a ban is to get rid of gasoline and diesel cars by the middle of the century.
European politicians want all cars and minibuses in Europe to be emission-free around 2050, or less than 30 years from now. Since the average life of a car is 15 years, to achieve this goal, action must be taken as early as 2035.
President of the EP Transport Committee, Karima Delli, called today’s vote a historic vote on the way to ecological transformation.
Proposal was supported with 340 votes in favor and 279 votes against.
The member states of the European Union have already supported the mentioned bill and, despite the objections of some MEPs, it will soon become law.
The authors of the bill indicate that car manufacturers will be given a clear deadline by which to switch to the production of zero-emission electric cars.
Also, enough time will be given to increase investment in production and withstand competition with Chinese and US car manufacturers.
Opponents, on the other hand, are convinced that neither European car manufacturers nor car owners are ready for such dramatic changes, and hundreds of thousands of jobs may be at risk.
At the same time, critics point out that rising electricity prices have disproved the claim that electric cars are cheaper to operate.
