Still no terminal for liquefied gas Terneuzen

NOS News

Gasunie has decided not to build an LNG terminal in the port of Terneuzen. The construction of the terminal to take in liquefied gas is “technically and commercially not feasible” in the Zeeland port, according to the company. All energy is now being used to expand the import capacity at the existing locations in Rotterdam and Eemshaven.

To ensure that the Netherlands can get through the coming winters without Russian and Groningen gas, the capacity to import liquefied gas must be expanded from 24 to 30 billion cubic meters. Gasunie therefore now wants to build a fourth tank with a capacity of 4 billion cubic meters on Maasvlakte 2 in Rotterdam. With a number of technical interventions, the yield of the floating terminal in Groningen’s Eemshaven must be increased by 2 billion cubic metres.

Low gas consumption takes pressure off the boiler

Because gas-fired power plants, households and industry consumed much less gas last year than in 2021, the gas storages are still well filled. There is therefore less need to supplement in the spring than previously expected. This relieves the pressure for Gasunie to construct a location for the intake of liquefied gas before the end of this year.

Board member Ulco Vermeulen of Gasunie previously indicated that Terneuzen is a more complicated location than Rotterdam and Eemshaven. “The large tankers must be able to reach the port, the quay must be made suitable and our own pipelines must be able to handle the amount of gas.”

Because Gasunie expects a ‘tight’ gas market up to and including the winter of 2024/2025, the company will continue to look at additional locations for new LNG installations.
