“We have three confirmed deaths. In addition to this, there are five victims who have been hospitalized,” Michigan State University Police said in a tweet.
The suspect opened fire shortly after 8:00 local time (0100 GMT Tuesday) in a university building before walking towards another building where gunfire was heard, according to Acting Campus Police Chief Chris Rosman.
He explained that a number of the wounded were in critical condition.
Police released photos of the suspect, a short black man wearing a jeans jacket, red shoes and a hat.
“We currently have hundreds of state, local and federal police and security forces on campus working in a concerted effort to ensure the security of the university and to identify and apprehend the suspect,” Rosman said.
Police quickly arrived at the scene and ordered the students and staff to self-isolate.
The university administration suspended all activities for 48 hours.
The United States is paying a heavy price as a result of the proliferation of firearms on its soil and the easy acquisition of these weapons by Americans.
A country has more individual firearms than its population: at least one adult in three owns a gun and nearly one adult in two lives in a home with a gun.
