The worries about the stores of Galeria Karstadt Kaufhof have not ended after the department store group’s insolvency. However, according to reports, some locations are already considered safe:
At the end of October 2022, Galeria Karstadt Kaufhof filed for bankruptcy. As the Süddeutsche Zeitung (SZ) reported, it could now be determined which of the 131 locations of the department store group are affected by closures. According to the report, a total of 60 shops will be hit, as SZ learned from business circles. This means that the number of closures is probably not as large as previously feared. A total of 90 Kaufhof and Karstadt branches were previously mentioned.
Galeria bankruptcy: These Kaufhof branches will probably be saved
The online retailer buero.de originally planned to take over part of the Galeria branches – but a negotiation date between a potential investor and the insolvency administrator in November 2022 burst, as HEIDELBERG24 already reported. The reason is a confidentiality agreement that Galeria Karstadt Kaufhof did not want to conclude.
Nevertheless, according to the SZ report, there are Galeria locations that are already considered safe from closures. These include, for example, branches in Aachen, Bonn, Braunschweig, Bremen, Dresden, Kassel and Würzburg. The Kaufhof branch in Mannheim should therefore also be considered a safe location. According to the Süddeutsche Zeitung also other shops in Baden-Württemberg, such as Heilbronn and Karlsruhe, although these have not yet been secured.
Insolvency of Galeria Kaufhof: List shows which 10 branches could close
According to the SZ information from business circles, around 60 branches of Galeria Karstadt Kaufhof are currently affected, which have to close as part of the insolvency proceedings. According to the report, these include double locations and shops in districts of larger cities, such as the following 10 branches:
- Bayreuth
- Göttingen
- Loerrach
- Luebeck
- Münster
- Nuremberg
- Reutlingen
- Speyer
- Trier
- Wiesbaden
Around 17,400 employees at Galeria Karstadt Kaufhof have had to fear for their jobs since the bankruptcy became known. They will probably have to wait until the end of March for the final decision waz.de already reported on Wednesday with reference to a meeting of the supervisory board. The nail-biter around the branches of Galeria Karstadt Kaufhof should continue for a few more weeks. With the insolvency proceedings, Galeria joins a long list of shops – for example, a well-known furniture retailer recently announced that it would no longer take any more orders.
