Jakarta –
After President Joko Widodo (Jokowi), the Draft Law on the Protection of Domestic Workers (PPRT bill) is now being pushed by the Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Mahfud Md to be approved soon. The DPR RI also sent back Mahfud Md.
Mahfud initially asked the DPR RI to speed up the ratification of the PPRT Bill because it had been discussed for 19 years. He reasoned that there are other laws that can be passed quickly.
“We are waiting for the DPR to be quicker, because this has been discussed for 19 years, while some have only been completed a week, that is. It has been 19 years so that there is a balance in responding to and discussing each of the bills,” Mahfud said at the Human Rights Parade. Mahfud also considered that the discussion on the PPRT Bill took too long. According to him, the ratification of this bill is like a debt that the government must pay before the period expires in 2024.
“So this is the government’s support for the immediate passage of the PPRT Bill because this has also become part of the Nawacita, meaning that for the government this is a debt that must be paid before 2024, but because this initiative came from the DPR, so we are waiting for it from the DPR,” he said.
Furthermore, Mahfud said that currently the government is still waiting for the DPR to discuss the PPRT Bill. Mahfud said the government was ready if the DPR would discuss it.
“For the government itself, the procedure is, if the DPR has sent it at the latest 2 months, we have returned it at the latest, even if it’s only two days we agree, this is there maybe it will be passed in the near future, this only takes a very short time if the government, which is working on yes the DPR,” he said.
Baleg DPR Denies There is a Law Completed in a Week
The Legislative Body (Baleg) of the DPR RI responded to Mahfud Md’s comments. Deputy Chairman of Baleg DPR Achmad Baidowi or Awiek said, in the context of the overall process of forming a law, no bill has ever been completed in a week.
“I don’t know what law is meant by Mr. Mahfud. I think if that was the context for the discussion, it could be. But if the context is from the beginning, proposal, preparation, discussion, a week’s time is not enough,” Awiek told reporters, Monday (13 /2/2023).
Furthermore, Awiek explained the legal product legislation process being worked on in the DPR. This, he said, includes the stages of proposing, drafting and discussing, then passed in a plenary meeting as law.
“Including for example from the government, the government wrote a letter, the DPR will discuss it, then a meeting, a trial, I don’t think there will be any in that week,” he said.
