‘The ‘Ronaldo’ problem has been eliminated and United look like a football team again’

Cristiano Ronaldo had a turbulent second spell at Manchester United, which went from bad to worse after falling out with manager Erik ten Hag this season. He struggled for playing time, scoring just one Premier League goal in 10 appearances. His contract was terminated on November 22, 2022 and he joined Saudi Pro League club Al Nassr at the end of December. Today ex-Spurs striker Garth Crooks believes Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure from Manchester United helped Marcus Rashford return to his best form after the England international netted again in the Red Devils win against Leeds United this Sunday, February 12.

Marcus Rashford has literally changed dimensions. After struggling all last season, he has been in sensational form this campaign. He has scored 21 goals in 34 appearances in all competitions this season, and his form has taken to a new level following the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo. His last goal came after scoring the opener against Leeds at Elland Road, heading into the back of the net after a fine build from Sabitzer and Shaw. United went on to win 2-0, securing all three points.

His performance earned him a spot on Garth Crooks’ Team of the Week. The football pundit of the BBC included the England international in their squad and justified their decision: “Rashford always looked menacing against Leeds and he was rewarded when he picked up Shaw’s most exquisite cross to send in a header that deceived Illan Meslier. I think it’s very telling that United’s results have steadily improved since Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure, as has Rashford’s presence in the team. The English striker no longer has to play second fiddle to a player (Ronaldo) who was desperate to cling to his former glories and who is much more interested in himself than the team. The problem has been eliminated and United look like a real football team again”did he declare.

Besides, Crooks clearly thinks Ronaldo was Manchester United’s problem and the whole team is better off without him. And to say the least, he’s not entirely wrong as United are currently third in the table and in great form.
