Victim of the violence of drug traffickers who cut off his two front legs, an old Mexican dog is in the running for the title of pet of the year awarded by pet lovers in the United States. In any case, this is the story that Patricia Ruiz shares to promote her life’s work, the “Canine Miracles” shelter located in the south of Mexico City. With his two prostheses, “Lemon Pie” is the star of the sanctuary which houses around 400 dogs and 89 cats near the canal area of Xochimilco, the city’s last pre-Hispanic legacy.
One of the contest favorites
Patricia has told her story dozens of times. “Canine Miracles” got a call 14 years ago that a dog had had both front legs cut off,” she recalled. “Lemon pie” would have been a victim of the Zetas cartel in the state of Zacatecas (center-north). In his misfortune, the dog was able to benefit from leather prostheses made in the United States, in Virginia. With his light coat bleached over the years, Pay de Limon is one of the favorites of the “America’s Favorite Pet” contest.
