Dhaka ∙ Former judge Mohammad Shahabuddin Chuppu (74) will be elected as the 22nd President of Bangladesh. He is the only candidate of the Awami League, which has a large majority in the Parliament, who has submitted his papers to the Election Commission. The opposition Jatiya Party has announced that it is not stopping the candidate. All the MPs of the main opposition party, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, have resigned, so they cannot contest. Awami League has 305 members in the 350-member Parliament.
The current president Muhammad Abdul Hameed will step down on April 24. Chuppu participated in the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War and was arrested and imprisoned in 1975 for participating in the uprising that followed the assassination of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in a military coup. Joined Judicial Service in 1982. He was an active worker of Awami League after his retirement.
