The fire service was notified of the fire shortly after 8 p.m.
Driven to hospital
The apartment building is located at Haukerød in Sandefjord.
Several private individuals must have started extinguishing before the emergency services arrived at the scene.
A total of 17 people are registered at the address.
In the first minutes, there was a person who was not accounted for, but the resident was quickly found by smoke divers.
– He has now been taken to hospital by ambulance. Several people have inhaled smoke, said Øystein Eikedalen, who is operations manager in the South-East police district.
It is not known if the man was seriously physically injured.
The emergency services eventually established that there were no more people inside the building.
There are four apartments registered at the address.
At 21.30 the police announced that the fire had been extinguished.
Uninhabitable
The house is currently uninhabitable.
– The apartment has suffered extensive damage, said Karl Fridtjof Jakobsen, fire brigade response manager.
It was also not recommended to spend the night in the other apartments in the building.
– Residents who are affected have found other places to stay for the night, Eikedalen stated later in the evening.
The area will be cordoned off for forensic investigations at a later date.
The fire probably started in the kitchen in one of the apartments, the police said.
