Used Cooking Oil Can Be Fuel, But…

Jakarta

Biodiesel can be produced from a variety of sources, one of which is from leftover cooking oil cooking oil. However, for the development of used cooking oil, a sustainable supply is needed.

Main Director of PT Pertamina (Persero) Nicke Widyawati explained, the current use of biodiesel comes from palm oil or CPO. This is the first generation of biodiesel development.

“That is the first generation, from the palm oil that we are using now,” he said the National Energy, Climate, Sustainability Competition (NECSC) 2023, Sunday (12/2/2023).

The second generation is the use of used cooking oil or used cooking oil. Nicke said that the Cilacap refinery was already able to process used cooking oil.

However, the problem is the supply of used cooking oil because the demand is great.

“Our supply of used cooking oil can’t continue because the demand is huge,” he said.

According to him, this supply problem is a common challenge. In addition, Nicke said, the price of biodiesel from used cooking oil is more expensive than palm oil.

“The price, if it’s called biodiesel from used cooking oil, is more expensive than palm oil,” he said.

The development of the next or third generation of biodiesel is derived from other plants. According to him, the development of third generation biodiesel is still ongoing.

“The third generation, this is what is being developed from other plants. There is from sorghum, we have a lot to do this,” he said.
