Fifth place for Kruzberg in the 1000 meters distance of the World Cup / Article

Kruzbergs won the third place in the 1000 meters distance overall in the season, but he was in the high eighth position in the total of all distances.

On Saturday, Kruzbergs won a bronze medal in the first distance of 1000 meters.

The Latvian started Sunday’s competition with the quarter-final phase, where he was convincingly second in his skating (1:25.368) and entered the semi-finals. In the fight for a place in the final, the Ventspils did not maintain the lead in the last lap, but the second place (1:25.183) was enough to enter the A final.

In the final, Kruzberg took the lead in skating in the second lap, but was overtaken by Canadian Pascal Dion in the penultimate lap. In the last lap, Kruzberg did not manage to stay in the top three in the fight with his competitors and he finished last, fifth (1:26.039).

The victory was won by South Korean short track athlete Jiwon Park, who finished in one minute and 25.359 seconds. He was followed by Dion, Italian Luca Spechenhauser, Chinese Sun Djazhua and Kruseberg.

Meanwhile, Reinis Bērziņš finished fourth in his skate in the quarter-finals of the 500-meter distance, behind two teammates from the Polish national team and a Dutchman. Both Poles reached the semi-final stage, but Bērzińs with a finish in 41.175 seconds was not enough to overcome this round. At the end of the competition, Bērziņš was classified in 13th position.

In the 1000-meter distance standings, Kruzbergs was third with 402 points behind Parks (488) and Dion (450), while Bērziņš’s 60 points gave him the 31st position. In 1500 meters, Bērziņš was fourth with 258 points, the first three losing 62 points, or equivalent to one position in the top three, while Kruzbergs was in 60th place with six points. In 500 meters, Bērziņš and Krūzbergs were in 23rd and 24th place with 74 and 72 points.

In the total of all distances, Parks won convincingly with 1068 points, Kruzbergs was eighth with 472 points, and Bērziņas took 13th position with 392 points.

This season for Krūzberg and Bērziņas is the best in their careers, as well as the most successful ever in the history of Latvian short track.

Kruzbergs won the 1000 meters in the first stage of the season in Montreal and brought Latvia its first gold medal in a competition of this rank. This season, he also won the medals of the other two events at this distance – one silver and two bronze, the last of them in yesterday’s competition.

Bērziņš, on the other hand, has won two bronze medals in the 1500 meter competition.

At the end of the season, from March 10 to 12, the world championships will be held in Seoul, the capital of South Korea.
