Arne Treholt (80) has died

* Arne Treholt was born on 13 December 1942.

* Norwegian civil servant and politician for the Labor Party.

* Was bureau chief in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs when he was arrested in 1984 and accused of espionage for the benefit of the Soviet Union and Iraq.

* He was sentenced in 1985 in the Eidsivating Court of Appeal to 20 years in prison for having revealed both military and political secrets to the Soviet intelligence service KGB in the period 1974–83 and to Iraqi intelligence 1981–83. He was pardoned on 3 July 1992 on health grounds after serving eight years and five months of his sentence.

* He tried to have the case reopened, but this was rejected several times.

* In recent years, Treholt has lived in Moscow, where he has run a business.
