In the summer, the platform already reported a worldwide record number of booked overnight stays, one hundred million per quarter, and in the third quarter of last year, its sales grew by more than a third year-on-year to 2.9 billion dollars (about 63 billion crowns).
The company does not provide data on the Czech market, but according to estimates, about 15,000 apartments are rented out to tourists on a short-term basis in Prague alone, which corresponds to roughly half of the hotel capacity. At the same time, it is not only Airbnb – many other platforms, such as Booking.com, also provide private accommodation.
Residents of tenements often complain mainly about noise and other negative phenomena associated with the movement and frequent rotation of tourists in the building. Opponents draw attention to the fact that the apartment is not a hotel and to the contradictions with building and fire regulations. Therefore, the Prague 1 Building Authority has already issued several decisions prohibiting short-term renting by apartment owners.
The regulation of shared accommodation is also currently being prepared by the European Commission. It mainly consists in the obligation of platforms to share data about landlords. Airbnb is already regulated by many cities around the world, such as Amsterdam or Barcelona. In some parts of the city, they have banned private accommodation for tourists or limited the time period during which the owner can rent the apartment in this way to only a few months a year.
