The mayor of Nîmes, Jean-Paul Fournier, opens the session by recalling the highlights since the last city council. “I welcome you to this room for the first city council of this year 2023. In recent weeks, our city has been able to celebrate the appointments that have become essential at the start of the year. Major events have met with great success during which the public has been able to respond present, such as the flamenco festival, that of biography, or the truffle festival, market square, but also in a completely renovated Fresque street, which we inaugurated at the beginning of January, and the big winter sale without forgetting the traditional aubade of folk groups.

The Times in the lead

These events were held after a multitude of Christmas festivities, much appreciated by the people of Nîmes. Another reason for satisfaction for the first city councilor, the presence of his city, the only one in France, in a ranking of must-see destinations in the world in 2023 established by the famous New York Times. “This wonderful news validates our choices in terms of developing the attractiveness of our city since 2001. We also learned the date and place of the 45th extended session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee. It will be held from September 10 to 25, 2023 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

It is on this occasion that the French Republic will defend the application file of the Maison Carrée. Moreover, the City recently received a delegation led by the mayor of Meniez, in Lebanon, to accompany this magnificent village in the protection of its vestiges of the past and discuss the development of a management plan.

Return also of Jean-Paul Fournier on the recent excavations of Jean-Jaurès: “We are proud of our heritage. Thus, it was with enthusiasm that I visited the archaeological excavation site, in the Jean-Jaurès district, where a formidable domus was unearthed. One more example of the legacies of Antiquity and the exceptional state of conservation of certain Nîmes sites.

The poster signed by the hand of a Nîmes resident

At the start of the year, it was also time for the presentation of the next poster for the 2023 ferias signed by Nicole Bousquet. “I know that the announcement of this poster fascinates many Nîmes who comment on it and sometimes caricature it. It is an event as expected as the announcement of the cartels. I am delighted to have been able to unveil this work of art which fits perfectly into the continuity of the 40 previous posters.

Before moving on to the study of the agenda for this session, the mayor wished to welcome the installation of the municipal council of seniors which took place last Thursday. These 26 “elders”, selected by application, will have to work and think about adapting the city and public action to the needs of seniors who represent a significant part of the population.

Finally, the mayor of the city ended by welcoming the arrival of a new director at the theater of Nîmes in the person of Amélie Casasole, who for several years directed the theater of Villefranche sur Saône.

Payment for parking

It was also a question of the implementation of dematerialized payment for on-street parking with mandate agreements for the companies Easypark, Paybyphone and Flowbird. As a reminder, the City has instituted paid parking in the city center of Nîmes and set the price scale for immediate payment of the parking fee on the one hand, and the price of the post-parking fee (FPS) on the other. share, including reduced FPS, by deliberation of January 1, 2018.

The city of Nîmes now wants to allow residents of Nîmes and visitors to pay for on-street parking in a dematerialized way through a mobile application that would offer an increased quality of service.

Indeed, the use of a mobile application makes it possible to simply pay for parking with a smartphone without having to look for a parking meter or have change on you, to the nearest minute since it is possible to interrupt the duration of parking or on the contrary, prolong it without risk of verbalization control.

The use of a mobile application also opens up the possibility of taking advantage of services such as geolocation, which allows the user to easily find his way around town and benefit from the appropriate rate corresponding to the parking zone of his vehicle, but also an alert system in the event of the authorized parking period being exceeded.

These measures will come into force on March 1, 2023.
