Belgians on top of French music awards: Stromae, Angèle and Pierre de Maere win

Belgian artists master French music. Angèle has been crowned best female artist at the ‘Victoires de la musique’, the biggest French music awards. Stromae is the best male artist and Pierre de Maere the male revelation of the year.

Stromae also received the album of the year award during the live broadcast on TV channel France2 on Friday evening, with Multitude. After a long absence due to a burnout, the 37-year-old Belgian singer is back. His counter is already at seven Victoires.

“I’m a little moved,” Stromae said. He thanked the people who work with him, his brother Luc Van Haver and Coralie Barbier, his wife.

Angèle was also allowed to add two Victoires to her palmares, the one for best female artist and most streamed album (for ninety-five). The counter of the 27-year-old from Brussels is now also at five.

And the artist Pierre de Maere, as yet unknown in Flanders, is also doing very well in France. He won the male revelation award.

The Victoires de la Musique have been regarded as the most important French music prizes since 1985. They form the French counterpart of the Flemish Music Industry Awards – although with our southern neighbors it is only a professional jury that awards the prizes, without a public vote.

The Belgian victory was written in the stars as Stromae and Angèle were nominated for four and three prizes respectively, both of which included ‘Album of the year’. In total, 9 of the 29 nominations were for Belgians. The only Frenchman to collect three nominations was rapper Orelsan.
