Ex-Augustiner boss Gerhard Ohneis is dead: mourning for a true beer baron

München – If the word beer baron applied to someone, then it certainly applied to him: Gerhard Ohneis. In addition to his work as a lawyer, the native of Munich has dedicated his entire life to beer. As the brewery announced on Friday, the longtime Augustiner boss has died at the age of 85.

“Old-fashioned in an endearing way”

He was the personally liable managing partner of Augustiner for eight years, until 2004 when Jannik Inselkammer, who tragically died while heli-skiing in Canada in 2014, succeeded him. It started in 1996, when after the death of Edith Haberland-Wagner, the last descendant of the Wagner dynasty, the majority of the Augustiner brewery was transferred to the Edith Haberland-Wagner Foundation in order to protect Munich’s oldest brewery from being accessed by multinational corporations.

During this time he carefully modernized the brewery (without changing the DNA) and strengthened the expansion in gastronomy. Mayor Christian Ude outlined his course at Augustiner on Ohneis’ 65th birthday in 2003: “Old-fashioned in a lovely way.”

As chairman of the board of trustees of the Friends of the Federal Garden Show in Munich in 2005, he undeterred collected donations for the federal gardens, for which he was awarded the gold medal “Munich shines”.

Of course, beer determined the widest areas of his life – in the presidium of the German Brewers’ Association, head of the Bavarian brewers and for 30 (!) years managing director of the Munich Breweries Association. More beer is not really possible, a true beer baron. He died on January 30 at the age of 85. He leaves behind his beloved wife, the Munich painter Farida Ohneis.
