A Turkish contractor was arrested before he attempted to travel after his building collapsed

A contractor of a 12-storey building that collapsed in the earthquake that killed more than 20,000 people in Turkey was stopped while trying to leave the country, according to the state-run Anadolu news agency.

An estimated 800 people are under the rubble of the Renaissance apartment building, which includes 250 apartments, in Hatay, in southeastern Turkey.

The man was arrested at Istanbul airport before he tried to leave the country for Montenegro with a large sum of money.

The luxurious apartment building that he was presenting on social media as “a corner of heaven” completely collapsed.

Turkish media reported that the Ghanaian soccer player Christian Atsu, who plays for Hatayspor FC, and the team’s sports director, Taner Savot, are among those trapped under the rubble of this building.

Since Monday, the Turkish media has denounced some contractors who used poor materials or did not respect safety standards.

According to the private NTV channel, the first legal complaint in this context was filed on Friday in Diyarbakir (southeast), followed by other complaints.

“Investigations are continuing regarding the collapsed buildings,” Turkish Justice Minister Bekir Bozdag said on Friday. “Those responsible will be identified and summoned before the judiciary.”
