The renowned Spanish film director Carlos Saura has died, aged 91.
Saura is compared by many to Luis Buñuel and Pedro Almodóvar and first became known for films that were critical of the Franco dictatorship in the 60s, including using metaphors and symbols to escape censorship.
In the 80s, he became better known for films with flamenco as a motif, among them the trilogy “Bodas de Sangre”, “Carmen” and “Tango”.
He has won the Silver Bear at the Berlin Film Festival twice and the Golden Bear in 1981, and he was twice nominated for the Oscar for Best Foreign Film.
He died at home in Madrid on Friday. surrounded by his family, according to the Spanish Film Academy.
