The death toll from the earthquake in Turkey and Syria exceeds 21,000

The earthquake, the magnitude of which was 7.8 on the Richter scale, occurred on Monday at 4:17 a.m. local time (3:17 a.m. Latvian time), its hypocenter was located at a depth of 17.9 kilometers, and its epicenter was 33 kilometers north of the Turkish city of Gaziantep. A magnitude 6.7 aftershock followed 15 minutes later, followed by more than 200 aftershocks. According to Turkish seismologists, the strength of the first shock was 7.4 magnitude.

Another 7.5-magnitude earthquake rocked Turkey’s Kahramanmaras province on Monday. A Turkish official said it was not an aftershock but a separate earthquake. It happened at 13:24 local time (12:24 Latvian time) approximately 130 kilometers north of Gaziantep.
