President of Taiwan Tsai Ing-wen and Vice President (Wapres) William Lai will each contribute a month’s salary to the relief effort Turkey earthquake. This was announced by the presidential office Taiwan on Thursday (9/2), adding to the aid already sent by the island.
Reported by the news agency ReutersOn Thursday (9/2/2023), Tsai and Lai “look forward to doing their part to help Turkey rebuild its homeland as soon as possible”, the presidential office said in a statement.
Earlier, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan on Wednesday acknowledged problems with his government’s initial response to the quake, as the combined death toll reported in Turkey and neighboring Syria had risen to more than 15,000.
Last year, Tsai and Lai also donated one month’s salary to help relief efforts for war-torn Ukraine. Tsai earns around T$400,000 (US$13,300) a month.
Taiwan, which frequently suffers from earthquakes, has previously announced a $2 million relief fund and has sent two rescue teams to Turkey to help search for survivors.
Tsai spoke via video call to several Taiwan team in Turkey on Wednesday (8/2).
