Government Russia threatened to respond if Britain sent fighter jets to Ukrainewarning of escalation.
“Russia will determine its response to any unfriendly steps taken by the British side,” the Russian Embassy in London said. English in a statement carried by Russian news agencies, as reported by news agencies AFPThursday (9/2/2023).
The Russian embassy said London would bear responsibility for the “‘bloody harvest’ of the next round of escalation and the resulting military and political consequences for the European continent and the rest of the world.”
Previously on Wednesday (8/2), the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky visited London, where he urged allies to send fighter planes to his war-torn country. This will be the Ukrainian leader’s second overseas trip since Russian troops invaded his country almost a year ago.
British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said there was “nothing wrong” when it came to military aid for Ukraine. Fighter jets for Ukraine are “part of the conversation”, Sunak said in a joint news conference with Zelensky.
Sunak’s office said that the British government would explore the possibility of sending fighter jets to Ukraine. This will be a long term solution.
“The prime minister has tasked the defense minister with investigating what jets we might be able to deliver, but to be clear, this is a long-term solution rather than a short-term capability, which is what Ukraine needs most now,” said spokesman Sunak.
Earlier in December last year, Zelensky flew to the United States on his first overseas trip since the Russian invasion. During that visit, Zelensky asked for long-term US support in Congress and held talks at the White House with President Joe Biden.
