Speed specialist Fanchini won two World Cup events in his career, a downhill in Lake Louise in 2005 and a downhill in Cortina in 2015.
Apart from these victories, by far her best achievement was the WC silver in downhill in Bormio in 2005.
Ended career in 2020
In 2018, she missed the Olympics in Pyeongchang after being diagnosed with colon cancer. However, she was declared healthy and made a comeback before ending her career in 2020, after, among other things, three Olympics and six WCs.
Last month, word came that Fanchini’s cancer had returned. When Sofia Goggia won the downhill in Cortina last month, she dedicated the victory to Fanchini.
– I want to dedicate this victory to Elena Fanchini, who is going through a tough time. Elli, this victory is for you, said Goggia then.
Two Italian WC golds this year
Today’s announcement clearly comes as a tough blow for the Italian team, whose WC in France started well with two golds in three competitions. The women’s super-G was won by Marta Bassino and the combination of Federica Brignone.
Fanchini died at his home in Solato, Italy, the Italian Olympic Committee writes on its website.
