Liverpool –
Liverpool’s stumbling this season is believed to be because their midfield is losing energy. Juergen Klopp it is advisable to let go of old players.
Liverpool have really struggled this season, as can be seen from how they spilled into 10th place Premier League. The team that last season almost won four trophies has only collected 29 points, the results of eight wins, five draws and seven defeats.
Throughout 2023, Klopp’s team has only won one win out of seven matches. They drew two and swallowed four defeats in that span.
Former Liverpool player Dietmar Hamann has been harshly criticized. One of the players he criticized was Thiago Alcantara, because he was considered unable to provide much in a team that even had difficulty controlling and using the ball.
“Thiago Alcantara is a player you have to be able to have. And if your team is not dominant in possession, then I don’t think you can take advantage of him,” Hamann told Liverpool Echo.
“He’s a player who doesn’t win the ball, he’s a player who doesn’t create assists and doesn’t score goals. So my criticism is always, what exactly is he doing?”
“I know he’s good looking and fun to watch, but last season he had three or four assists and scored one goal in the Premier League. He’s not a holding midfielder, he doesn’t know how to make tackles and not win the ball.”
In general, the player who defended Liverpool for seven years also highlighted other players such as Fabinho, Jordan Henderson, James Milner and Curtis Jones. He suggested that old players should just let go, in order to provide younger players.
Two names that have so far been widely criticized and considered to need to be replaced are Henderson and Milner. Currently, Liverpool are starting to rely on young talents such as Harvey Elliott, Fabio Carvalho, Stefan Bajcetic.
“Fabinho has faded so far and he is really vital for the team. Jordan Henderson is in and out of the team, James Milner is towards the end of his career, and Curtis Jones is not developing,” continued Hamann.
“So if asked of all these players, who do I want to keep next season? I would say keep the young players, because you have to give them opportunities to improve or develop,” added the former German national team player.
