The Ateneo occupies the “Casa de las Martínez”, named after the people of Jericó and ceded on loan for a term of five years by the Agudelo-Arboleda family. It is located on Calle 7 Carrera Tercera, number 2-63, and contains a collection of about one hundred and seventy musical instruments from various regions of the world and another series of pieces related to Music.
This cultural reference point for Jericó has been possible thanks to the deference and detachment of Mr. Álvaro Arango Gaviria and his family, as well as Comfenalco Antioquia, the John Ramírez Moreno Foundation, the EAFIT University, the Association of Friends of the Museum and the Mayor’s Office of Jericho.
For many years, Mr. Álvaro Arango Gaviria, in his trips abroad for work or tourism reasons, became interested in acquiring musical instruments from different families and origins until he reached a collection that, in the opinion of some professors of the Department of Music of the University EAFIT, who collaborated with its inventory and classification, may be one of the most important of its kind in the country. This collection will be intended not only for contemplation, but also for research. Its components may be used for chamber concerts, prior studies and corresponding arrangements.
The museum will forever pay special tribute to the memory of Don Álvaro who died in the municipality of El Retiro on December 13, 2018.
