Scientists Combine Catfish-Alligators for Human Food

Jakarta

Scientists from Auburn University combine catfish with DNA alligator to create humanity’s future food. This is done in order to make catfish that do not carry disease.

In research published this January, they attempted to modify catfish with cathelicidin genes from alligators. Cathelicidins are found in the gut and function as antimicrobial peptides that help living things fight disease.

Launch Science Alert, Wednesday (8/2/2023) there is a significant comparison between catfish that have been modified and those that live in the wild. The modified catfish had a 2-5 times higher survival rate.

Furthermore, the researchers added cathelicidin to the genes for reproductive hormones. Hence, it reduces the catfish’s ability to reproduce. Nevertheless, according to them, it is actually good to prevent genetic contamination of hybrid fish with wild catfish.

In Indonesia, catfish is an animal that is often consumed by the community. The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) noted that catfish production in Indonesia will reach 1.06 million tons with a value of IDR 18.93 trillion in 2021.

If sorted from the largest catfish production area, West Java is in first place with 245,408.8 tonnes. The next positions were occupied by Central Java and East Java with catfish production of 164,608.29 tons and 137,196.1 tons.
