WC in skiing: Vlhová defends the silver, Žampova’s eighth participation and the battle between Kilde and Odermatt

For most of the year, the attention of alpine skiing fans is focused on the World Cup, the program of which usually consists of twenty stops across Europe and America. In February, however, the World Championships will take the floor, with an immediate possibility of winning a medal in six men’s, the same number of women’s disciplines and in the mixed competition. And elite skiers definitely do not attach less importance to that. The championships are held every two years, and their venue will be France for the fifth time. In total, it will be the 47th year of the event under the banner of FIS. Petra Vlhová is defending the two silver medals she won in the slalom and alpine combined in Cortina d’Ampezzo 2021. While this will be Vlhová’s sixth participation in the World Championships, Adam Žampa will be performing at this forum for the eighth time. Two years ago, he took an excellent eighth place in the giant slalom, before that he was part of the Slovak team in Are, which took fifth place in the team competition. Up to six Slovak representatives should appear on the slopes.

The rich fortnightly program in the French resorts of Courchevel and Méribel will be a fixed part of the Joj Šport television broadcast. You can read more about our broadcast in a separate article. She does not yet have a triumph in the strongest slalom discipline, and as she announced before the current season, she wants to focus mainly on the successes that she still lacks in her career. Of course, the top favorite is Shiffrin, the six-time world champion. In the men’s segment, the great Norwegian-Swiss battle between Marc Odermatt and Aleksander Aamodt Kilde is expected to continue. Kilde reigns this year in the downhill, Odermatt is the World Cup leader in giant slalom and in Super G they occupy the first two places, with the 25-year-old Swiss on top. In the slalom, it could be a big drama with a large list of adepts for the precious metal. Defending champion Sebastian Foss-Solevåg is behind compatriots Braathen and Kristoffersen, Swiss Yule and Meillard, Austrian Feller and German Strasser this year.

In addition to the two mentioned names, the starting field will also include a slalom skier and a “demolitionist” Martin Hyškawho already competed at the 2017 and 2019 World Championships. In the women’s section, our colors will be defended by a 19-year-old specialist in speed disciplines Rebeka Jančová also universal Petra Hromcová. Both got the opportunity to show themselves in this season’s World Cup. Jančová in St. Anton, Hromcová in Špindlerův Mlyn. The youngest of the Žamp clan, Teo Žampa, competes in the giant slalom and team competition.
