The prefecture informs by means of a press release: “according to the data collected during the last hours, a fishing boat flying the Sri Lankan flag could arrive on Monday in Reunion”. The number of people on board, and their intentions are not known at this time. If it is confirmed, the State services will be mobilized to manage the arrival.
The ship is currently in the North of Mauritius. Two other boats could follow.
According to our information, it would be a ship that left Diégo Garcia, in the Chagos Archipelago, ten days ago. 25 Sri Lankan nationals are believed to be on board. If this news is confirmed, it will be the second ship carrying migrants since the beginning of the year and the sixth since last July. The last ship had docked at the Port on January 14, with 69 people on board.
During his press conference, the prefect did not hide the possibility of seeing other boats arrive in the coming months. “The same procedures will be applied,” he warned.
