The investigation against Mason Greenwood is closed

Since the end of January 2022, Mason Greenwood has been charged with attempted rape and assault causing bodily harm, among other things. The plaintiff is his ex-girlfriend.

As a result of the allegations, the 21-year-old has been suspended by Manchester United ever since. The trial was scheduled to take place on November 27, 2023. But now comes word that it will not take place.

On Thursday, the Manchester police announced that the investigation against Mason Greenwood was closed. All charges against him have been dropped and he is no longer charged with any crime.

“Given the extensive media coverage surrounding this case, it is only right to share the news that the 21-year-old man, who was arrested and charged in connection with an investigation that began in January 2022, is no longer at risk of being punished for any crime in the case,” the police write in a press release.

“Despite the media and public interest in this case, we have decided not to comment further on it in any detail”.

According to The Times, a spokesperson for the Public Prosecutor’s Office commented on the decision to drop the charges as follows:

“In this case, the combination of the withdrawal of key witnesses and new material that has come to light meant that there was no longer a realistic prospect of a conviction. In those circumstances, we are obliged to drop the case,” the spokesperson said.

Manchester United have yet to comment on the decision, nor what is happening with the suspension against Mason Greenwood. The 21-year-old’s current contract with the Premier League giants, which is still valid, runs until 2025.
