Jakarta –
Australia is rumored to be eliminating portraits War Elizabeth II of AU$ 5 notes or the equivalent of IDR 53,000 (exchange rate of IDR 10,600) and replacing them with new designs with indigenous images. Through its new design, the government of Canberra seeks to respect and preserve indigenous history.
Dikansir from CNBC, Thursday (02/02/2023), the Reserve Bank of Australia said in a statement, this decision follows the results of consultations with the federal government, which also supports the decision.
“This decision was taken after consultation with the federal government, which supported this change. On the other side of the note it will continue to feature the Australian Parliament,” the Reserve Bank of Australia said in a statement.
Meanwhile, the Reserve Bank of Australia said it would consult with indigenous groups in designing the AU$ 5 note. It took several years to design and print new banknotes. Until then, the current printing will continue to be published.
It should be noted, Queen Elizabeth’s death in 2022 has reignited debate in Australia about its future as a constitutional monarchy. Voters narrowly voted to keep the British king as head of state in a 1999 referendum.
King Charles III, who became British monarch after the death of his mother, is head of state in Australia, New Zealand and 12 other Commonwealth countries outside England, although his role is largely ceremonial.
Australia in September 2022 said an image of King Charles would not automatically replace Queen Elizabeth on the AU$5 note, and that she might be replaced by an Australian figure.
Meanwhile, authorities said the decision to include the queen’s image on the AU$5 note was a personality conflict with her status as a monarch.
The decision to update the print also comes as the centre-left Labor government of Australia is pushing for a referendum, needed to amend the constitution, to recognize Indigenous peoples in the document. Not only that, the workers also asked them to be involved in consultations regarding the decision.
