Research institute Nivel will release the most recent flu figures on Wednesday. This will show whether the Netherlands is still in a flu epidemic, or whether it is over. Last week’s figures showed a significant decrease.
At that time, 34 out of 100,000 people had visited their GP with flu-like symptoms. About half of the samples taken by doctors for further examination actually contained a flu virus.
The epidemic is over when the figures are below the so-called epidemic limit for two weeks in a row. This is set at 58 GP visits per 100,000 inhabitants. Incidentally, the researchers also look at other factors, such as the percentage of patients who carry a flu virus.
The current flu epidemic started in December. In addition to influenza, as flu viruses are officially called, various other respiratory viruses are circulating, such as corona, RS, rhino and human metapneumovirus.
