Discord was recently updated with support for AV1 streaming and this update has been found to contain a bug that slows down the video memory of Nvidia graphics cards.
Discord is probably a name that many people recognize. The platform has grown to become a proper player in the communication platform market over the past few years. Most of all among those who like to gather their companions with whom they often play online games.
One feature Discord offers is that you can stream your games to members on servers you are a member of. This feature was recently updated with support to be able to use AV1 encoding and decoding for these game streams.
However, it has now emerged that this update also comes with a probably less welcome function. Multiple users on Reddit have reported that the update has resulted in the video memory frequencies of their graphics cards being lowered by up to 200 MHz. Something that should happen when Discord is running in the background.
Nvidia itself has confirmed the existence of the problem and has promised that it will send out an updated driver that will fix the problem. Exactly when this will take place is not clear, but via Nvidia help page a temporary solution is presented to the person affected by the problem.
Speaking of who is affected, according to the reports, it seems to be mostly users of graphics cards from the Geforce RTX 30 series. Something that can be seen as a bit odd as the AV1 update only enables streaming with this codec if you use a graphics card from the RTX 40 series.
